Dark Fall is a first-person horror adventure game, created and released by XXv Productions in June 2002. The Adventure Company published the game worldwide in 2003 under the name Dark Fall: The Journal.
The game starts with a recorded message, received from the main character's brother. He was hired to determine if an abandoned railroad station, which was also a hotel, can be refurbished. His message talks about ghost hunters and strange things happening there, and asks his brother to come and assist him. Once at the station, the player doesn't find his brother and starts to investigate his disappearance. It turns out that during a night in 1947 something strange happened there, causing the disappearance of all the hotel staff.
Geared with some ghost hunting equipment like cameras, sensors, and goggles, the player starts the quest to find the missing brother and solve the station mystery. Most of the time played is dedicated to puzzle solving. There are all kinds of puzzles, ranging from door codes to decryption of letters, and coin phones usage. A pen and some paper may be useful while playing the game, as not a single clue found from investigations can be saved in the game itself. There is no Journal option, so the player must remember all the information discovered along the way, and puzzle solutions.
Dark Fall is a good adventure game. Even though the graphics are very old, the immersive story and the dark atmosphere make it a classic of the horror adventure genre.
